Arts & Sciences Competitions

Many SCA events feature one or more arts & sciences competitions. Anyone can enter. The competition calendar is usually announced at the start of the year (the mundane calendar year, not the society year), and these are printed in The Page newsletter, which is mailed to dues-paying members, and sometimes added to the West Kindgom website.

How to Enter a Competition

Once you know what the competition category is at an event, plan to have your item finished and ready to drop off at the event usually by 1pm on Saturday of the event (unless stated otherwise). For performance competitions, you need to sign up at 1pm on Saturday for a performance time. Look for the Arts & Sciences pavilion or room.

If you can't physically attend an event, you can still enter a competition (although not a performance, of course). If you don't know someone who can take the item to the event for you, contact the A&S minister about shipping your items in advance. Make sure to leave enough time for this.

Documentation is often required to accompany your entry. Ask the A&S minister beforehand to make sure.

Don't forget to pick up your entry, documentation, and judging sheets after the competition is over!

Arts & Sciences Displays

Some events also have non-competitive displays of arts & sciences items. Usually, the A&S minister will request entries in advance, either individually or through the SCA-West email list.
