Largess

From In The West-The West Kingdom Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Largess technically means gifts given from one of higher station to one of lower station, such as from royalty to those serving them. It can also mean from royalty to other royalty (such as at a war or other inter-kingdom event) or even between friends of the same rank.

What Kind of Gifts?

The gifts should be in period, of course. They are generally small and not of vast monetary value because so many are given at one time. But they should still be of good quality materials and construction, suitable to reflect the station of the giver and receiver and the occasion.

If you can research and document the item, all the better!

Where Do the Gifts Come From?

Royalty often ask people to make gifts for them, such as members of their court or artisans they know. If you are asked to contribute, you are not obliged, but it is courteous to respond swiftly and honestly if you can or cannot meet the request. Clarify with the person asking what type and quantity of item is needed and the deadline. This will ensure a smooth process for everyone.

Also, it is proper to attach a small, unobtrusive (and period-appropriate) tag on the finished gift stating who made the item. Your SCA name on a little slip of parchment-like paper is sufficient. The largess recipients do like to know who in the populace created the tokens they receive.

Sometimes, several people may combine talents to create a larger gift, such as an entire gift basket.
