Steingrim Stallari

Persona

Steingrim Stallari is a Norwegian nobleman, but the century he lives in has changed over time. For many years he was a 10th-11th C Norseman, but in recent years his persona has switched to the 14th C.

SCA

Steingrim has a long history in the SCA. He joined the Society in June 1970 at the first tourney of the Barony of Three Mountains. He received his AoA in 1974 and was knighted in 1976. Over the years he as served in a variety of ways, including as Baron of Three Mountains in An Tir (the greater Portland, OR area). For this service Steingrim was awarded An Tir's highest honor, being named a Lion of An Tir.

Until February 2010 Steingrim lived in the Barony of the Three Mountains in An Tir. An Tir did not not become its own Kingdom until 1982, so Steingrim started his SCA career in the West. During the time An Tir was a Western Principality Steingrim served as Prince of An Tir four times. In 1979 Steingrim became the first Western King from An Tir, winning the West's first (and only-to-date) three-way, two-day Crown Finals (the other finalists being Radnor of Gildimar and Chrisopher of Houghton). Steingrim became King of the West a second time in 1981 and thus received his Dukedom as a Westerner. After An Tir became independant His Grace went on to reign over that great Kingdom as well.

For most of the 1990s Steingrim was heavily involved in researching and recreating historicaly accurate Viking/Norse culture within the SCA. He was a founder of the Varangian Guard, a group based on the Vikings that served the Byzantine Emperor. That group was highly influential in the growth of interest in Viking culture within the SCA.

Steingrim is also well known for his armouring. He is cited in Brian Price's book "Techniques of Medieval Armour Reproduction: The 14th Century" as one of the early SCA armourers who, along with James Grayhelm, drove the development of armouring technique on the West Coast. Steingrim is also skilled at woodworking using period tools.

In early 2010 His Grace moved away from his beloved An Tir to the brown rolling hills of the West Kingdom to be with his lady, Genevieve de Vendome. He now resides in the Shire of Esfenn in the Principality of the Mists.

Household

Steingrim's household is named Stallarifannsk. His Grace has 6 squires (Ellisif, Atli, Ula, Tekla, Lawrence, Wolfgrim, and Borik), and 2 men-at-arms (Caoven and Mark), all of whom live in An Tir and who are all are greatly missed by His Grace.

Testamonials

Jeff (Steingrim) is the original "Super-Duke" of An Tir. His squires have become Knights, Masters-at-arms, Laurels, Pelicans, and royalty in their own right. He has held many offices at many levels in An Tir and is an ideal of chivalry that many compare themselves agsinst to this very day. His skills off the field as an artist and armorer are matched by his prowess and honor on the field. His teachings stretched across the wide arena of middle ages life and culture. He influenced not only his own squires and apprentices, but that of many of the other Antirian "Greats". Namely Duke Torgul, Duke Dak. Jark Barak, And the list goes on and on.

I was lucky enough to have been his squire. His example is what I based my actions and deeds upon. He was my primary role model and I think it served me very well. I would not have become a knight, Court Baron or kingdom officer without his guidence and counsel.
